Answer
How can I recycle/dispose of my yard waste?
Yard waste is considered grass clippings, brush cuttings, leaves, and sticks/small tree limbs.
To DISPOSE of yard waste with regular trash, tree, and brush cuttings shall be cut in pieces small enough to fit in a receptacle and set out.
Visit the Department of Sanitation website at phila.gov/leaf-recycling.

You Should Know:
Follow these tips for bagged leaf collection during the 2024 Philly Leaf Recycling Program (November 4 - December 21):
  • Bagged leaves will only be accepted in biodegradable paper bags.  These bags can be processed for recycling along with the leaves. This reduces contamination in the recycling process.
  • Do not mix trash or other recyclable materials with bagged leaves. This contaminates leaves and makes them unfit for recycling purposes.
  • Use as many bags as needed, maximum 40 lbs. each.
  • Bags may be purchased at most hardware stores. Bags are not provided by the Streets Department.
  • Leaves set out curbside, either in bags or containers, will be collected as trash, not recycling.
Residents who wish to RECYCLE yard waste must take brush cuttings, tree limbs, leaves, and similar materials to the drop-off centers on Saturdays Only.
  • Citizens can drop off no more than 8 bags of yard waste each time.
  • Vehicles must be unmarked and have PA tags.
  • Yard waste should be in plastic bags.
  • Tree limbs should not be more than 4 feet in length or 8 inches in diameter.
  • The Sanitation Convenience Centers are a convenient drop-off point for Philadelphia residents only. Waste materials from non-residents will not be accepted at the sanitation convenience center.
  • Waste materials generated from businesses will not be accepted at the sanitation convenience center. Vendors are responsible for making arrangements for the private disposal of their waste.
  • Cardboard boxes or paper bags may never be used as containers for trash/recycling. If they get wet, they cannot be recycled.
